How We Make Money

This site is free to read. Here is exactly who pays for it, and the rules we follow so that money never decides what we recommend.

Last updated October 10, 2026

The short version: if you sign up for something through a link on this site, we may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra. It never changes a ranking, a score or a verdict.

Where the money comes from

Affiliate commissions

Some links to platforms, brokers, marketplaces and tools are affiliate links. If you sign up or buy through one, the company pays us a fee or a share of the sale.

Display ads

Some guides carry ads served by third-party ad networks. Ad slots are always labeled "Advertisement" and kept visually separate from our content.

Sponsored placements

Occasionally a company pays for a clearly labeled "Sponsored" spot. Sponsored items never appear inside our rankings or comparison tables.

Our own experiments

The flip log and case studies are real projects run with our own money. Profits from them are ours. Losses too.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not charge for any guide, calculator or newsletter.

Affiliate disclosure

Productive Degenerate participates in affiliate programs run by the companies we write about and by affiliate networks. When you click an affiliate link and take a qualifying action, such as opening an account, making a purchase or starting a paid plan, we may receive compensation.

This disclosure is provided in line with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's guidance on endorsements and testimonials (16 CFR Part 255).

How picks are chosen

Every method, tool and platform is judged on the same attributes, so you can compare them side by side:

What we checkHow
Fees and pricingPulled from the company's own pricing or fee page and dated. We recheck offers at least every 14 days.
Real cost to startWhat you actually spend before your first dollar back, including tools, inventory and subscriptions.
Time to first dollarFrom our own tests where we have them, and public data where we don't. We label which is which.
Risk and downsideWhat can go wrong, how much you could lose, and how hard it is to get out.
Hands-on testingWhere possible we pay for the product ourselves and use it for at least 30 days before scoring it.

Reviews and scores are dated. When pricing or terms change, we retest and update the date.

Editorial independence

Advertisers and affiliate partners don't see our content before it's published, can't request changes, and can't buy a better score. If a partner's terms get worse, we say so, even if it costs us commissions.
